St Mary’s Kangaroo Point

Such places may be natural formations, hidden nooks and crannies where few folk go, or man-made edifices which seek to express human aspirations. A stroll through the park along the cliffs at Kangaroo Point reveals one of the special places of the city of Brisbane.

St Mary’s Church is situated high on the Kangaroo Point cliffs is heritage listed and built in 1873, its pipe organ is the oldest in Queensland. The church has beautiful stained glass windows, timber ceilings and solid stone construction. St Mary’s was patronized by the early governors when they resided in the Old Government House in George Street. It has always been the Navel Chapel in Queensland and was connected by stairs to the historic Navel stores below. There are a number of naval memorial plaques throughout the beautiful established garden.
